There is also a 7-band graphic EQ with three user memories and five presets for rock, pop, jazz, classic, and vocal sources. Each of the seven bands can cut or boost the signal as much as 12dB, and the filters have a Q of 2.0, as verified by the target optimizer in the FilterShop Lite software from LinearX. This equalizer section can be automatically aligned to your vehicle's environment and your listening position by using the deck's built-in pink noise source and the calibrated microphone that comes with the unit. The microphone is also used by the deck to adjust the volume level up or down according to the ambient noise in real time. In other words, when the noise level "heard" by the microphone increases, the deck's volume increases to compensate. This is called DNC (Dynamic Noise Covering) and it works quite well.
Four line outputs with 6 volt swing feed your front and rear amplifier inputs, with a selectable highpass filter that cuts out the lowest frequencies. A mono subwoofer output with adjustable gain and a lowpass filter at either 80Hz or 100Hz gives you the signal for that monster amp. If you are replacing a factory head and don't have amps, there are four powered outputs with 25 watts each to drive factory speakers or your own component sets. The amplifier section can be defeated if you don't need it, which makes the unit run much cooler and saves energy (gasoline!). You can choose to connect a CD changer, which is controlled by the deck, or an auxiliary input to expand your system. The remote amplifier turn-on lead has a pause that can be adjusted from 0.25 to 2.25 seconds so that you can ensure that your preamp electronics (external crossovers and equalizers) power up before the amplifiers, avoiding that nasty and sometimes dangerous turn-on thump. Other connections include a cell phone mute, illumination (dimmer) control, and an antenna turn-on lead.
Remote control is provided in the form of a handheld infrared unit about the size of a very small cell phone. The remote has a simple layout that's easy to remember in the dark, but it also has a button on the side that lights up the buttons for 20 seconds. A unique shape guarantees that you know which end to point at the dash, and the IR receiver comes with a cable that places it anywhere up to three feet away from the deck.
The CD70 has the great looks and solid engineering we have come to expect from Blaupunkt. The addition of automatic equalization and gain control, along with implementation of the DigiCeiver tuner, has raised the bar for the price/performance ratio. Give this one a close look when you are shopping for a new deck.
