The fiberglass-reinforced body filler was spread onto the outer edges and trunk latch cover and let to cure. Once the filler goes green (the stage just after the filler is tacky, when it's firm but not hardened), the high spots can be worked off with a cheese grater or rough file. Then, the entire surface was smoothed up with a DA sander. Here you can see part of the mounting attachments: the backstrap in the center hole.
On both sides of the panel, the lid needed to clearance for the trunk lid attachment points. The trapezoids that were made earlier were taped double sided to the base. Then the same process of reinforced body filler was used to build up the surrounding area, creating the recesses for the acrylic panels. Then, the entire panel was sanded with 80-grit. Note the notched area for the wiring to pass into the trunk lid.
The trunk lid was sprayed with upholstery cement for the dark gray Ultrasuede. The upholstered piece was installed for the last time on the trunk lid. With the three matching acrylic panels covered with a metallic vinyl on the backside and the Digital Design mantra, "Peace, Love, Bass," in place, the finished product is pretty impressive, especially for a single day's work.
