While we remain fans of stereo sound we embrace surround sound technology and the wealth of new software being developed for the format. Although we're still waiting on the original 5.1 recording that's going to break wide open the industry... Until then there are plenty of classic recordings now available on 5.1; and there's no end to the number of movie titles we can slot in for the surround sound experience. Our goal with this project on the audio side is to create a sound quality oriented vehicle designed for optimal listening of 5.1. On the presentation side, we want to make things as stealthy as possible. No need for neighbors and passers-by to see any gaudy gear; and the stealth install we hope will keep thieves and vandals away.
We began work on the Honda with a performance upgrade. With springs from Eibach in hand we shipped the vehicle off to Tokico for some new shocks. The install for this took less than an hour -- easier than changing out your factory speakers! The vehicle was lowered an inch (a fraction more once it settled). Prior to this modification the Honda drove very soft, leaning precariously left or right on corners, and bouncing up and down over speed bumps and potholes. It was your typical factory ride that offered little control for the driver. With the new springs and shocks, coupled with Falken's low-noise tires wrapped around Velox wheels, you could feel the road and maintain most of the vehicle's speed on wide, arcing corners. Passengers in the rear no longer felt car sick from the mushy suspension, especially over bumpy local streets. Overall, this compact SUV drives more a little more like a sedan. The lowered stance reduced the Honda's profile, making it less susceptible to leaning, and the tighter suspension gave the driver a feeling of sticking to the road. And the Falken tires gave you the ability to feel the grooves in the road, providing greater awareness of street conditions and better handling. Everything combined, it was a welcome change.
Next up, the surround sound install. Stay tuned.
