Not liking current flashy trends, Team JBL member Dave Vestal decided to go for "subtle" modifications on his 2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD. "The install is 'kid friendly,' practical, functional, detailed, rock-solid tough, completely vibration free and just done right," he says. Although Vestal fitted the exterior with aggressive tires, rock protection and recovery gear, the interior looks factory... almost. A double-DIN head unit handles navigation and more. In conjunction with a DVD player accessible from the rear seat, it sends video to headrest monitors as well as its built-in monitor. In the rear of the Toyota, the stock sliding cover hides a rack constructed out of aluminum. It holds components "just like an aircraft avionics rack, with everything accessible and wired neatly," states Vestal. Taking the aluminum outside, Vestal used it and stainless steel for mounts. Surprisingly, the entire install can be removed without leaving any indication of its presence. For now, people see the system, and often. Because Vestal lives in car-audio-happy Florida, he can take his ride to shows almost every weekend, despite the fact that he's a proud (and busy) member of the Coast Guard. When he returns from his current stint in the Caribbean and the Gulf, keep an eye out for him and his impressive 4Runner.
