Dungeon FamilyEven In DarknessThe boys from Outkast just cannot be stopped! The beats are exactly what you would expect from Outkast, (funky and addictive) and the lyrical skills are stand-out. They are known for their original style and their old school funky beats. When I first heard about this CD I was quite excited to see what it would be all about. I can't really stress enough how tight this whole CD is. "Even in Darkness" is a collaborative effort put together by the boys from Outkast. The group consists of 13 guys that could give George Clinton and his P-Funk All-Stars a run for their money. Track #2, "Crooked Booty", shoots straight at you. Right away when you hear it, you know the boys from Outkast had something to do with it. Track #3 "Follow the Light" has a really tight beat. You know, even if I attempted to describe the sounds it would be impossible. DF will remind fans of Parliament, not only for the outlandish costumes but the ferocity of the funk. If George Clinton had been born 20 years later, he would probably be the founding member of Outkast. Put this CD to the test. It'll give your subs a serious workout. If your head unit and your amp can supply the power and your subs can take it the Dungeon Family will definitely dish it out. Chances are this is the best CD you've never heard of, don't miss out on it. -chux
SevendustAnimosityThis hard rock group is led by one of the best vocalists in hard rock. Only Lajon has the ability to project such blood curdling screams one second, and two seconds later sing a chorus that pervades you with a sense of peace. His voice is as soothing as a whisper, and delivers the power of a sledgehammer. Track #2 "Praise" is their hit single off this album and this track is the perfect example of how magical Lajon's voice is. Of course the rest of the credit must go to the band. The musical talent of the band definitely carries the voice to a new height. Track #8 "Follow" is performed by Lajon with additional vocals by another rock standout, Aaron Lewis of Stained. Even though Aaron contributes his vocal talents only for the chorus, he has a tremendous impact on the material. Track #12 "Redifine" is one of the hardest tracks on this CD. And finally Track #13, which by itself is worth the CD: "Angel's Son" is a dedication to Lynn Strait the lead singer of a hardcore band called Snot. Lynn died December of 1998; he was a friend to Lajon as well as many other big names in music. The CD I have came specially packaged with an extra disc attached to it. It contains live versions of "Denial" and "Angel's Son", both recorded at a performance in Florida. Check out www.tvtrecords.com. -chux
Pete YornMusicforthemorningafterPicked by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the "Best New Bands of 2001" Pete Yorn brings a unique style to the music industry. Some of his vocals are a bit raspy, adding color to the singing. I'm not sure if everyone remembers Mazzy Star, but for those who do, Pete Yorn's music is like an upbeat version of a Mazzy Star album. Track #1 "Life On A Chain" somewhat resembles the sound of an old classic rock song. There are certain parts of the song that break down to where you can barely hear him, and all of a sudden the music comes blasting at you, enveloping you with sound. Track #2 "Strange Condition" is another one of the more popular tunes, and is similar in tone and style to the first song. Track #3 "Just Another" is as inviting as it gets. Track #6 "For Nancy" is pretty much the song that has gained everyone's attention. This song is in a class by itself. It's that good. There is not a single thing they could've done to make this song better. This CD forces you to get in touch with your sensitive side, so know that going in. Some of you tough guys may not admit that you own this CD but you're not foolin' anyone, we all know you listen to it in bed, the morning after. For more info check out: www.peteyorn.com. -chux
