Merle HaggardRoots Volume 1Country legend Merle Haggard brings the past into the present, covering classics by Lefty Frizzell, Hank Thompson and Hank Williams, Sr., among others. And there are also three Haggard originals on the CD that fit well stylistically with the established tunes; more importantly they stand up to the classic material. "Roots" also is notable for the return of Norman Stephens, guitarist for Frizzell. The guitar work, especially the dual parts, is so tasty and pleasing that they compete with Haggard's voice for the listener's attention. All of the band members deserve praise and recognition: Norm Hamlet, Doug Colosio and Abe Manuel Jr. Their playing is as pure as the recording. A good adjective for this CD. It's pure and the material exemplary. As the popularity of commercial country grows it's refreshing to get back to its honky tonkin' roots. Look for this on Anti Records. -Ben
Phyllis SmoovyThese guys are coming to you live from Orange County, California. They've got that same Rap Rock sound that's so popular right now but these guys actually do a way better job of blending the two styles. The sound of a good bass guitar mixed with live drums and live turntables has got to be one of the most complicated things to do in the music industry today. You can't just have anyone jump on the turntables and expect your band to sound that much better. These guys obviously have some knowledge and history in hip-hop and rock. Each song that has a chorus is broken down nicely with a transition from either the bass guitar or the turntables. One of the best tracks on this CD is track #9 titled "3 day suspension". This song pretty much takes you back to those elementary school days playing tag with the girls and those high school days of getting punked by bullies. The great thing about these guys is they do everything themselves. All business, marketing, management, and bookings. These guys are definitely one of the best bands coming out of Orange County right now. Get more info at: www.phyllislive.com. -chux
Square CircleSay Hello to Square CircleFinally a group that is not following what everyone else is doing. It was quite complicated to come up with a description for this group because of their original style. These guys are a group of four coming straight from the San Diego underground. When it comes to original style, musical talent, and a sense of humor these guys have it all. They successfully blend the sounds of turntable scratches, samples, live drums, guitars, and keyboards and bring it all together with some insane electronic vocals. Yeah I know the description of them so far sounds a bit strange but imagine if a live hip-hop group and a computer all got together one night and accidentally conceived a few children. Those children would probably be Square Circle. This is the type of CD that you just need to check out for yourself. If you don't like it at first believe me give it time, it will become one of your favorites. Check out www.revoltrecords.com. -chux
