2009 Pontiac Vibe
High Standards
For 2009, the compact crossover gets a little more of everything. There's extra power and variety from the 32mpg highway 1.8L and the 2.4L engine, available in the standard, GT and AWD versions. And the extra go comes with more show, for a fresh exterior styling that gives the car a faster design as well.
Up from the four-speed auto, the five-speed manual that comes from the 2.4 liter is the way to go, especially in the GT. In this one, it's the standard features inside that count. The new Vibe makes even more use of its compact size. Behind the styled-out lift-glass rear gate, there's 49 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down. Plus, there's more stealthy storage compartments than you would even know what to do with.
We do know what to do with the Monsoon seven-speaker system, with a 320-watt amp and subwoofer. In this little cabin, it sounds just as good as the 11-speaker setup in the G8 GT. Coupled with the sunroof, this Sun and Sound package is an essential option. Plus, you have your OnStar navigation, XM satellite radio for free the first three months, and the usual portable music player capability. The audio systems for both the Vibe and G8 may be fine and well for general consumers perhaps, but an aftermarket upgrade on the audio system would be de rigueur for car audio enthusiasts.
The sporty bolstering on the leather-accented seats is the biggest highlight. Of course, it's all part of the Vibe GT package. For a total price of $19,895 for the best of the model and $15,895 for the entry-level 1.8 liter, it's a great package deal.
