Big BrotherThe Sony CDX-GT81UW is like the older, wiser sibling to the CDX-GT610Ui. It builds on the Sony genetics and adds style and additional useful features. The most obvious difference between this unit and its sibling is the large dot-matrix display on the sleek motorized detachable faceplate. The faceplate has three tilt angles to ensure maximum visibility. Two large silver buttons sandwich the tuning button that flanks the left side of the volume knob, providing easy access to the Source and Mode functions. To help tie the CDX-GT81UW's cosmetics into the vehicle's interior, Sony provided the head unit with two illumination colors (red or blue).

Connecting the CDX-GT81UW to either the factory audio system or an aftermarket amplified audio system is a straightforward affair. The internal amplifier puts out 52 watts per channel (17 watts/channel RMS), more than enough to motivate most factory speaker systems. Adjusting the audio quality was as simple as selecting the desired EQ3 setting and making some minor tweaks with the three-band equalizer to make the speakers sing. For vehicles with front speakers mounted low in the door, the CDX-GT81UW features Sony's proprietary Dynamic Soundstage Organizer that "lifts" the sonic imaging - making for a great sounding front soundstage. The CDX-GT81UW also features three sets of 4-volt RCA pre-outs (front, rear and subwoofer) to ensure maximum control and connectivity to any aftermarket amplifier.
Surprisingly, the only area the CDX-GT81UW came up short when compared to its sibling the CDX-GT610Ui was in regards to iPod connectivity. The CDX-GT81UW, while offering more RCA outputs and more audio control, isn't equipped to control an iPod right out of the box. Adding Sony's XA-110IP ($49.95) iPod interface module overcomes the CDX-GT81UW's iPod deficiency.
So which Sony head unit is the better choice? There's no wrong answer between these two units. If maximum connectivity to a multitude of portable digital audio players (right out of the box) is a priority, the CDX-GT610Ui is the logical choice. For those looking to add more control and refinement to their audio system, the CDX-GT81UW shines. Choosing a favorite between these two is as difficult as choosing between Ginger and Mary Ann. Have fun trying to decide.
