Portable boom boxes a thing of the past? Not so. Blaupunkt's come up with a unique concept that is highly versatile and performs great (editor tested). The Velocity 2Go (available with 5.25" or 6.5" woofers) is a portable, amplified stereo system that accepts audio from virtually any media player via a 3.5mm headphone connection. There are also rear-panel rCa inputs for use with variable line-level outputs from a preamp, TV set or other audio device. But here's the kicker-purchase the optional Quickout car dock ($100) and the Velocity 2Go automatically turns into an adequate subwoofer system for your ride, including separate input level control, lowpass crossover and phase adjustments. Power comes from built-in amps delivering a combined output of up to 160 watts (80 watts rMS) when connected to either an aC or 12-volt dC source, and 60 watts max (30 watts rMS) when powered by eight aa batteries. While yet to become a permanent bass fixture in this staffer's vehicles, the Velocity 2Go (from $400 to $450) gets considerable play everywhere else.
