The Hawaiian island of Oahu may be small, but it's deceptively rich in culture. Karl Kawachi's '05 Mini Cooper is similarly small and similarly deceptive. However, it's not culture that this Mini is hiding, it's sound. Repping both the state and its quality audio and fabrication work, Kawachi's Mini turns heads across Oahu.
To achieve his dream of creating a proper showcase for the island's talent, Kawachi tapped both the in-demand Chad Paredes of Extreme Audio Systems and veteran installer Earl Shimabukuro, who collaborated on the Mini. "Never having worked together before," Kawachi explains, "they both brought different ideas and techniques to the project." The result is the unique vehicle you see on these pages.
Driver Profile:
Karl Kawachi, who got into car audio in the early '70s when he managed a Muntz stereo store, stresses that although the Mini is not a daily driver, it was built to be like one. "One of the initial guidelines was it had to be a true demo vehicle," Kawachi says. "Anyone should be able to sit in the car without the fear that something was going to break." When in Honolulu, Kawachi drives the vehicle to shows. This is no trailer queen. "We are able to demo it anywhere. When doing long shows we just roll in, connect the two in-car power supplies to an outlet, and we're ready to go." Of course, alternate arrangements will have to be made when the Mini goes off-island.

Completing the install was... Completing the install was a generous helping of Rockford Fosgate Dead Skin to dampen vibrations, Rockford Fosgate 12-gauge speaker cable, Rockford Fosgate interconnects, custom 12-volt neon tubing, as well as an Exide/RF battery in the stock location, Rockford Fosgate CPCC1 50-farad capacitor, Rockford Fosgate power distribution block and AGU fuse block, and two Cascade APS55 55-amp power supplies. A single 5-channel Rockford Fosgate Power 1000 amp with up to 1,400 watts on tap powers the whole vehicle. The front and rear channels were bridged to power the front two speaker sets and the sub channels feed the woofers. The amplifier was mounted in the lower rear hatch area just below the LCD monitor and covered with a one-piece panel made from fiberglass. It can be easily removed for repairs or adjustments. A backup camera was installed along with a remote eye for the monitor. Lastly, a matching backlit oval logo covers the amplifier. | One of the unique features... One of the unique features of the Mini is its center console, which rises from the dash and connects to the ceiling between driver and passenger. This was fabricated out of fiberglass to house two 5-inch LCDs, each in an oval-shaped pod, which can be used to display the rear camera or DVD source. The whole thing is backlit. | The brain of the install is... The brain of the install is an Eclipse AV3424 DVD receiver with 7-inch LCD monitor, installed in the stock location (this was recently replaced by a JVC KD-NX5000). For signal processing, a Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.2 was installed to allow for full interaction with the system wirelessly via Bluetooth with a Palm OS device. That means equalization, level setting, time delay and signal processing can be controlled from inside or outside the car. |
