As part of our 20th anniversary retrospective, we're showcasing some of our favorite vehicles of the past two decades. You'll be able to vote on your favorite car later. Here's the 3rd installment.
A car enthusiast, Earl Wills bought his 1994 Impala SS for its power and spaciousness, but when he sold his competition pickup that same year, he decided to build a system worthy of the new Impala. Turning to installer Howie Liwanag for the elbow grease, Wills helped plan out the system which featured Image Dynamics speakers (his son Rodney worked at Image Dynamics at the time), Sony source units and Zapco amps.
Up in the dash, a cloth covered wooden grille fits over the mouth of each Image Dynamic horn-loaded compression driver. At the lower part of the center stack, a Sony XVM-80 8-inch video monitor provides visual entertainment. It's backed up by a 4-inch monitor at the back of the center console.
In the trunk, the six Zapco amps share room with Street Wires batteries, one installed on each side. Under the rear deck, an aperiodic enclosure holds a pair of Image Dynamics 18-inch subwoofers.
At the very base of the stack, a tinted panel displays the readouts of amp temperature and system voltage. Meanwhile, Liwanag widened the center console to hold the Image Dynamics signal processors.
