Clean finishes. Luxurious upholstery. Tight design. All descriptions apply to every bespoke vehicle we've seen roll out of New York-based Ai Design (www.aidesign.com). They've churned out extreme customs, such as the luxe van we ran a couple of years ago (http://www.caraudiomag.com/features/0604_cae_mobile_office_space/index.html), and more sedate creations like this Mercedes Benz SL500.
In this small SL500, space issues reared up and got annoying. This Benz is no show car. Its driven regularly and has to have cargo space for groceries, luggage and baby diapers (note the baby seat outfitted in matching upholstery). Fitting a new head unit and factory replacement speakers is easy enough in a whip like this. Doing a thorough job by adding a new amp and subwoofer takes some forethought.
Despite the challenges, the team at Ai Design managed to find room for the necessary audio gear and the bulky cargo of everyday life. Best of all, they did it with style. Check out the fabulous color matching and clean work in every detail of this one-of-a-kind Mercedes Benz SL500.
