Boston Bass
Like a pickle in a hamburger, the S63's factory sub was quickly discarded for something more flavorful. Realizing the potential of the large hole left in the sheetmetal of the rear parcel shelf, Owens designed a single-reflex bandpass enclosure for two Boston Acoustics SPZ-555 oval subwoofers. To take full advantage of the opening, an 8-inch diameter port was used to connect the enclosure to the rear deck, feeding bass directly into the the S63's cabin beneath the factory grille. Because the output of these two large-format drivers is vastly superior to that of the factory sub, the Edge Audio team braced and dampened the parcel shelf to keep vibrations at bay.
Open the trunk and you notice that the enclosure has a subtle arc that matches the trailing edge of the rear window. To form this arc on the backside of the enclosure, Owens used 31/44" Lexan (polycarbonate). "It's bendable unlike Plexiglas, bulletproof and virtually scratchproof," he explains. But the biggest benefit is to allow lucky onlookers to scope out the elaborate metalwork and handcrafted details, such as the faux-wood dust cap covers on the subs and the AMG emblem plate.
Origin Of Power
Buried deep in the trunk are two Kinetic KHC-800 batteries that supply the reserve juice for the 3.6 kilowatts of power on tap via five Genesis Series III amplifiers. Of these amps, two Dual Mono Extremes were used to run the frontstage-one powering the tweeters in the A-pillars and the other, the two sets of 6.5" midbass in the front doors. The rear door 2-way components get power by way of the remaining Dual Mono Extreme, while each of the subwoofers is paired up with its own Monoblock amp. Routing the signal, Owens used the internal crossover adjustments on the amplifiers along with the bi-ampable passive networks supplied with the Supremo 6 components.
The view of the polished amplifiers is one that catches your eye. Each of the Genesis Dual Mono Extremes sit end to end across the backside of the enclosure, enhanced by the glowing halogen lights the crew mounted in the trunk and the hand-painted wood grain insert. The two monoblock amps sit out of sight within the steel and wood framework that make up the amprack.
Stinger products were used for power, signal and power distribution. Fuses and other necessary items are accessible behind the easily removable side panels.
