There are as many different reasons to do an install as there are installers. The drive to compete, love of great sound and good old vanity all have their place. But if the installer is representing a car audio company like Scosche, your reasons are more about showing off new products than anything else. Hence the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser you see on these pages, a vehicle that manages to not only display Scosche's new EFX lineup in the best possible light, but also takes care of that great sound everyone loves so much.
This FJ Cruiser is all about the low frequencies. With eight Scosche 12" EFX HDW1244 dual 4-ohm woofers on board, this thing has more than enough bounce to the ounce. The enclosure was fabricated from wood designed with squared lines and edges to complement the bumpers and FJ factory styling cues. The ultimate goal here was "loud and low," as the installers explained. "[With] eight 12's in a sealed enclosure, with six firing back and two firing forward, [we] easily met our expectations," they said.
Woofers without amps are just really expensive salad bowls, so each of the eight Scosche HD1400 monoblock 800-watt amps runs one of the eight 12" woofers. For the front door and kick panel's speakers, installers Trevor Kaplan and Nathan Perkins dialed in a Scosche HD4300 4-channel 800-watt amp. One Scosche HD4300 4-channel 800-watt amp runs the outward-facing rear seat speakers and the rear-window pods in the back of the truck, while one HD4300 4-channel 800-watt amp runs the rear-door panel speakers. To prevent unruly vibration, Scosche Accumat Hyperflex was used throughout the vehicle. Basically, anything that could rattle was dampened.
Trevor Kaplan and Nathan Perkins,... Trevor Kaplan and Nathan Perkins, Scosche's in-house installers assigned to the FJ Cruiser, knew that Scosche wanted a great-looking vehicle that would attract both eyes and ears. For the eyes, the truck was sent over to L&G Autobody in San Dimas, CA, for generous applications of flat black and House of Kolors Tangelo Orange paint. Back in house, All Pro Off-Road front and rear bumpers and rock rails were added, as were PIAA lights and custom wheel guards for a rugged, off-road look. Completing the mud-ready appearance are 33" Nitto Mud Grapplers on custom-painted Akuza 20" rims. | To really grab attention,... To really grab attention, a good demo vehicle has to have something to see as well as hear. Complementing the low frequencies is a number of monitors installed throughout the vehicle, starting with the aforementioned Valor head unit, which boasts a 7-inch monitor. For additional video input, go no further than the glove box, which houses Scosche RCA inputs for an iPod video. Three 10-inch flipdown Valor monitors reside in the headliner, two 7-inch Valor monitors face out from behind the front seats on the sub enclosure, while a 32-inch Coby LCD HDTV, disassembled and then flush-mounted into the inner tailgate rear door ties everything together. | But really, what's off-roading... But really, what's off-roading without musical and visual accompaniment? To that end, Kaplan and Perkins installed a Valor double-DIN DVD head unit, using a Scosche dash kit and wiring harness in the factory location. With the brains of the system in place, it was time to think speakers. A pair of Scosche EFX HDX67 6.5" components were placed in the factory door location and loaded in the rear, while the grilles were flushed and color-matched. Not content with just door speakers, the guys molded fiberglass kick panels for a set of Scosche EFX HD52 5.25" coaxial components and loaded those in the rear. The grilles were flush-mounted into the kick panels and also loaded in the rear. |
One look at the FJ Cruiser... One look at the FJ Cruiser will tell you there's going to be a lot of low frequencies coming out of the back, so Kaplan and Perkins wisely threw in a few more component sets. They molded a trim panel onto the side of the sub enclosure and flushed in the grille and rear-loaded a pair of Scosche EFX HDX67 6.5" components. In the rear-window area, they molded pods, flushed and painted the grille, and then rear-loaded a pair of Scosche EFX HDX67 6.5" components. | | |
